Population estimates
With so many sources of population data it is difficult to find the most appropriate data. Here is a guide to the best total population figures for areas within Hertfordshire:
- Local Authorities
The most up to date total population estimates for Hertfordshire and the ten District Council areas are the Registrar General's Mid Year Population Estimates. These are published on a yearly basis, the latest available figures are for 2009, but yearly estimates are available for 1981 onwards. Data is available by gender and five year age group. These estimates have been published on hertsdirect.org and are available by selecting the link entitled Registrar General's Mid Year Population Estimates for Hertfordshire (on the right hand side of the screen). - Towns
The most up to date total population estimates for Towns in Hertfordshire are derived from the 2001 Census and are available on hertsdirect.org by selecting the link entitled Population and household counts for Hertfordshire settlements - 2001 census (on the right hand side of the screen). - Villages and Hamlets
The most up to date total population estimates for Villages in Hertfordshire are derived from the 2001 Census and are available on hertsdirect.org by selecting the link entitled Population and household counts for Hertfordshire settlements - 2001 census (on the right hand side of the screen). - Small Area Geographies
Experimental population estimates, consistent with the main mid-year population estimates, for Local Authority Wards and Super Output Areas are available on the National Statistics website by selecting the link entitled Small Area Population Estimates (on the right hand side of the screen). Annual mid-year resident population estimates are available at national level by single year of age and sex and sub nationally (local authority/health area) by five year age group and sex. These include additional selected age groups and broad components of population change.
In addition to the main mid-year estimates the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have produced a number of experimental datasets which are consistent with the subnational mid-year estimates. These statistics are in the testing phase and are not fully developed. They include
- Estimates of the very elderly (including centenarians) for England and Wales.
